A JUTE’S LOVE STORY

One of the most environment-friendly fibre, the jute has been part of the Indian culture since the 3000 B.C.

Commonly mistaken for linen due to its identical feel, jute is a light but strong and durable vegetable fibre, commonly used for ropes, twines, coffee sacks, but seldom for clothes.

The amount of jute produced in the world and the variety of its uses is enormous. However, compared to other fibre, uses much less water, requires no chemical pesticides and fertilisers to grow, and replenishes much faster. Not only is it completely biodegradable, but also recyclable.

Furthermore, in jute production countries, its cultivation and export constitute a value chain with great potential for smallholder famers due to the growing global demand for environmentally friendly products.

Its silky lustre, high tensile strength, considerable heat resistance and long staple length are the qualities that cannots be matched by synthetic fibre.

Our summer saharianas are made of natural jute from Kolkata, which is blended with organic cotton for a superior soft touch.

We are extremely proud to be the first brand in the world to be using jute to manufacture our jackets.

ESSENTIALLY COTTON

We use high-quality, organic Indian cotton twill. A robust, dense and easy to care for, this fabric is, in fact, an extremely popular choice for military uniform and workwear.

Sahib is committed to using organic cotton. A factor often overlooked is whether cotton is organic. This is very important in determining the final quality of the product. Organic cotton is a sustainable, renewable and biodegradable fibre. However, most of the cotton grown is not organic. Non-organic cotton contributes to environmental pollution through the use of pesticides and insecticides. It also exposes both cotton growers and consumers to toxic carcinogenic chemicals that are used during production.
